Medicine Can Show You the Truth, Culture Helps You Survive

(If you follow this article to the end you will see my Linktree and you can even read the book I wrote when I was sure I was dying — because it seemed surreal, the level of synchronicity, as well as wanting my kids to know I loved them and I tried really hard, if I were going to die.)

Before I became ill, I studied international relations and culture in Washington, D.C.
I learned about the rise and fall of civilizations, Eastern and Western philosophy, political systems, diplomacy, and peacebuilding.
But there was nothing — nothing — about Native American culture.
For someone born into a bicultural lineage, part Native and part European, it felt like looking into a mirror with half the reflection missing.
So I began quietly trying to trace the lineage myself. Not as an academic exercise, but as a daughter and a mother.
I wanted to understand what had happened to my ancestors — and why so little of it had made its way to me.
When illness arrived, that quiet pull became a prayer.
And that prayer led me to Patricio Dominguez. I get it that sounds weird, but when you're dying and you have two little kids you're willing to consider things that otherwise sound odd.
Dominguez, and the International Council of Elders
Patricio is widely known as a revered medicine man and spiritual leader — including his appearance in The Spirit Molecule — but what mattered most to me was something else entirely.
Patricio didn't give me a ceremony.
He gave me structure.
He gave me presence.
He taught me how to carry what I was receiving — and showed me that healing isn't about breakthrough, but about what holds the breakthrough.
Also, I was offered the opportunity to study at his side and "carry bags" at an International Intertribal Council that was made not for the glory or the money, but literally for the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy that predated the Conquest.

Watch on FacebookThe Experience Alone Is Not Enough
Plant medicine is powerful. It can be sacred. It can reveal truth.
But without structure, it fades. I mean almost every single tribe has a Plant Medicine, but it is not what is pushed forward front and center. Really it's the knowledge, the time and the education that is charged for — when Elders do charge, they typically seem to do so in order to "pay the rent" so they can share their knowledge.
Without the knowledge, the container, much of what is most meaningful is lost due to lack of proper orientation.
I've seen this again and again in the modern wave of seekers drawn to ceremony.
They see something beautiful. They receive insight. They leave with a full heart.
And then, slowly, the vision slips through their fingers.
Not because they failed. Not because they did it wrong. But because they were never taught what integration actually is.
Integration Isn't Reflection — It's Structure and Habit
What most people are offered after ceremony is reflection. Journaling. Talking. Trying to "stay grounded."
But true integration is not about remembering an experience.
It's about reorganizing your life around what you now know.
It's not emotional processing. It's structural realignment.
In the Native traditions I've learned from, this is why the Kiva matters. Why the Lodge matters. Why the Medicine Wheel isn't a symbol — it's an operating system.
You don't carry sacred insight with memory. You carry it with structure.
Without a Container, Even the Deepest Truths Fade
Ceremony can open a door.
But without a system to hold what you receive, it leaks.
It loops. It fades like mist in the morning light.
What breaks my heart most is that many sincere people believe something is wrong with them — when in truth, it's the absence of a container that's holding them back.
A Return to Integrity
I share this not as someone who claims to hold all the answers, but as someone who has walked both worlds.
Academic and ancestral. European and Native. Spiritual insight and embodied survival.
What I know now is this:
Medicine is not asking you to escape. She is asking you to return — with what you've seen — and do something real with it.
To bring it into presence. To root it in structure. To let your life become the lodge where that wisdom lives.
The Work Continues
Patricio — and also now Adam Yellowbird as a dynamic duo — continue this work through international alliance-building, creating true containers of empowerment for the people of the Americas.
They are not simply holding ceremony.
They are holding systems, trying to reconnect the beautiful web of life that should connect the "Eagle, Quetzal & Condor" — North, Central & South America.
They are shaping the foundations required for this work to remain alive, dignified, and effective — but not just about psychedelics. About Mother Earth, community, Seed Sovereignty, trade, and intertribal unification at a higher level.
Every Ceremony Mother Earth Speaks to Us if We Listen.
This is the first step toward understanding what plant medicine is truly asking of you.
Not to keep drinking. Not to romanticize Indigenous culture. Not to run away.
But to bring the medicine home — and allow it to reshape the way you live, move, and serve.
If this resonates, take a breath. Sit with it. And let the medicine settle… into structure.
