The Making of the Documentary: A Traditional Elder Speaks Out
By Dr. Courtni "StarHeart" Hale, Ph.D. (Cand) — Founder, Plant Medicine University
For decades I watched my teacher, Patricio Dominguez (Tiwa/Piro-Manso lineage), walk far ahead of the spotlight. He held ceremony, he listened, he carried knowledge from pre-conquest lineages and ancient trade-routes bridging the Andes, the Southwest, and beyond. He worked with the Inca "Taita" elders, united ritual families from Colombia to New Mexico, and even participated in the experiment with Rick Strassman and DMT ("The Spirit Molecule").
Yet, when it came to being filmed — on camera, in front of modern lights and microphones — he resisted.
The world around him was changing: a plant-medicine gold rush, retreat centers lacking integrity, social media "shamanfluencers" who had no ceremony background, and the risk of trauma, misunderstanding, and exploitation.
He felt it was his moral obligation to speak. To document his lineage. To protect the living tradition. And so, after years of persuasion and preparation, the documentary was born: a rare chance to watch an elder of deep traditional lineage step into the lens — not for self-promotion, but for service.
Why making this film mattered
Preserving oral tradition
The teachings he holds were never meant to be typed or posted — they were passed by firelight, in song and dream. By filming him, we capture the rhythm, the cadence, the authority of the projection of his voice — not replacing the ceremony, but preserving the container for a modern audience.
Authentic lineage in crisis
We are witnessing an era where plant-medicine retreats are popping up like festivals, many without ethical container, without elder supervision or pre-ceremony preparation. My teacher said: "If we don't speak now, we may lose the map." This documentary stands against that distortion.
Bridging ancient and modern
He carried knowledge from both Native Southwest (Tiwa, Piro, Manso) and Andean Inca lineages. He also participated in modern scientific experiments (DMT) which placed the mystical into Western research language. The film becomes a bridge between tradition and science — a core mission of Plant Medicine University.
Invitation to the serious seeker
This isn't entertainment. It's a call to those who want safe, structured, meaningful transformation. The film shows the respect, the training, and the cost behind this work. It weeds out the passive tourist and invites the student.
A new educational container
Through the documentary, you'll see not just a ceremony but the preparation, the fasting, the cleansing, the lineage councils, the trade routes of knowledge. It becomes a teaching tool — one we will use in the Four Keys system to help you understand why ceremony isn't just an event — it's a relationship.
What this means for you
As someone serious about plant-medicine integration, this film offers you a rare lens: behind the curtain of true tradition. You'll witness a teacher who refused to be filmed because film is a tool of the consumer age — and only accepted because the risk to ceremony integrity became greater than the risk of exposure.
You'll see what preparation looks like in the trenches, what container actually means, and why lineage matters far more than Instagram posts or retreat hashtags.
If you've ever felt something is missing after your ceremony, or worried about the booming "plant-medicine industry," then this documentary is for you. It's a reminder that real transformation doesn't begin when you sip the cup — it begins when you walk the path of preparation, alignment, community, and sacred tradition.
